Steven Wooddell is a musician living in Atlanta who grew up in Roanoke, Virginia.

Because his mother grew up in Germany he got the opportunity to visit family frequently throughout his childhood. Being in Germany for those trips gave him the chance to see beautiful architecture and a completely different landscape than southern Virginia. The mountains and the Appalachian trail that goes right next to Roanoke also gave him the opportunity to be immersed in what is still beautiful in that part of the country. Beautiful architecture and natural spaces are still important to him and he looks forward to learning from the gifted photographers on this site!

Starting piano lessons at age 9, he gravitated primarily to classical music- particularly as he began taking organ lessons a few years later. Organists were and still are in short supply in Roanoke and he got to play for church services around town. There was something unique about organ in the vast tonal possibilities of the instrument combined with the rich and varied music that has been written for it over hundreds of years.

Steven also played clarinet and saxophone in the local youth symphony and school band. In high school he was invited to take part in an invitational weekend at the North Carolina School of the Arts on clarinet. While there he took an organ lesson with Dr. John Mueller and was able to eventually study organ during his last two years of high school in Winston Salem. He went on to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Southern Methodist University.

In between degrees he took a break in Sewanee, Tennessee to do an internship at the University of the South where he played organ and piano for the university choir and the Episcopal seminary there. He met his wife Joy while there and they now live in Rome, Georgia with their three children.

Steven now works as an organist and pianist in the Atlanta area.
