As the global forum for cooperation among its Member States and the world aviation community, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) sets and evolves Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) supporting the sustainable development of safe and reliable air services all over the world. Presently, there are over 12,000 such Standards and provisions contained in ICAO's 19 Annexes to the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention).

ICAO Standards help to harmonize global air transport activity supporting social and economic development and the broader connectivity needs of global travellers and businesses. This helps to foster peace among world nations and peoples while improving general prosperity levels everywhere that aircraft can fly.
