Retired Geological Engineer and sometimes part-time professional photographer. I photograph what interests me, which may be anything, but mostly nature. My photography developed as a way to capture and share what I see and feel but prefer not to describe in words. The majority of my work includes landscapes, wildflowers and abstractions. If I photograph people, I much prefer candid shots.
My photography, for good or bad is somewhat influenced by my life and work elsewhere. When I was a geology student at the University of Arizona, I noted something about the photography of my fellow students. I see the same influences in myself of geology which leads one to view subjects in a more complicated environment. That means we have a tendency to incorporate extra surrounding items or complex mixes of subjects rather than focusing on isolated subjects.
As a part-time professional photographer my work included several photographs for general publications, a documentary of the stained glass and architectural elements in a church, and advertisements and illustrations for travel and public relations magazines and maps.
My one Great Dream is to someday follow Spring north, shooting the scenes and opening wildflowers along US highway 93 from Wickenburg, Arizona to the Canadian border.
“Just don’t drink the water from the stream at Wickenburg. It has a notorious reputation.”
I've been taking pictures intermittently when it fitted into my life, since my first try, about 1948 or '49, it's a bit hazy. My first real success, in my opinion, was at Mesa Verde, Colorado in 1958 and an Argus C3. I say that it was a success because many of the photos on that trip had good composition while I had no idea what composition was.
Color, line, curve, mass, texture, etc. all fascinate me.
