Karski (Roy Valk, 1974) and Beyond (Roelof Schierbeek, 1983) are known as an artist duo from the Netherlands. They have a background in graphic design and the academy of ne arts and were heavily involved in gra ti. Karski picked up the spray can when he was only 10 years old. Beyond, being from another generation, started painting in 1997.

They started combining their skills in 2012 as an experiment. Because the rst wall they painted together worked out so well, they decided to join forces. Since then they have created several murals together in numerous countries. Karski and Beyond both have a passion for traveling and creating art. They are happy that they can combine these passions in their daily life.

Their work is known for the use of original and vivid colour combinations. It contains realistic, graphic and abstract elements often with surprising depth as well as incredible amounts of dynamic. Photography, being a part or their curriculum, aroused their interest in the creative part of this discipline. This clearly shows in their current work.

When Karski painted his rst big mural in the slums of Harare, Zimbabwe, he found out how much a painting does for the people living close proximity.. Before the paintings were made, people where ashamed to tell others they were living in this area, but after the paintings were nished, people became proud to say they were living in one of the “art buildings”.

The fact that Karski’s and Beyond’s art combined can make people feel proud of their neighbourhood is more than a positive side e ect.

For Karski and Beyond, art is a way to express themselves, and doing big murals such as these is what makes them feel alive. Each of their paintings tells a story.

It is therefore that they truly are modern storytellers.

Karski and Beyond’s murals didn’t go unnoticed.

In 2017 they were granted the Dutch StreetArt Award for the “Best Dutch Mural”.
