Deccio Serrano, Professional Photographer
Born in Guatemala in 1972, he initiated his work as a photographer hand to hand with Diego Molina and Ricardo Mata, two of the biggest representatives of photographic art, back in 1990. He studied a degree in Photography at Atlantic University, USA.
He started his career as a journalist in 1993 at Prensa Libre, one of the most important newspapers in Guatemala, where he made himself noticed as a photographer and soon reaching his own spot in the hard field of daily journalism at a country with great contrasts and big events within the political, economical and social fields.
With his lens he has captured several historical and memorable events in his country occupying a recognized position in the mayor Guatemalan newspapers such as Prensa Libre and Nuestro Diario, this last one the top seller in Guatemala, Central America and the Caribbean.
His success has transcended his frontiers throughout especial jobs for the French Press Agency, for the one he has been worked as a freelance. During Alvaro Colom’s period as former President 2008-20011 he was assigned as the presidential photographer, covering the most relevant events for his country.
Since his beginnings at Prensa Libre until his professional consolidation at Nuestro Diario from 1999 up to date, he has traveled around his country covering events such as tropical storms, floods, landslides, revolts at national jails and other high impact situations, this has led him to obtain a vast experience in journalism as a graphic reporter.
The events captured by his lens show not only how they occurred but the precise moment in which they happened, leaving the reader the feeling of mere reality.
In other words, the experience obtained in the field of action and the professional development had been the two pillars where he has sustained a career that have left as a result a photographer with many karats, and prestige at the national journalism environment.
