Artist Statement
I make work that is concept led, focusing on issues that deal with the human condition. I explore a wide variety of concepts dealing with politics, gender, war, religion and history. I work across a broad array of media; including text, textiles, 3D, digital images and paper works, using the media that I feel is best suited to the concepts that I am exploring. Through different projects I have used violent processes of burning to demonstrate the violence of war and racism, I have subverted the visual language and techniques of textile and fashion to critique sexism and have utilised the act of censorship to explore issues of policing the internet and the destruction of artworks and archaeological sites.
My work is influenced by a wide variety of sources – literature, documentaries, news articles and other practicing artists. Artists such as Rachel Whiteread, Mona Hatoum and jenny Holzer who continue the feminist canon of the personal as political and use interesting and non-traditional methods and medias in their work.
I feel that an artists role should be to create challenging and thought provoking work in order to change lives and ultimately inspire social change in the world.
