Born in Chicago on November 25, 1960 and raised and reared in The Theatre of The Windy City, DARRYL MAXIMILIAN ROBINSON is a 50-season-long, critically-praised and award-winning American veteran stage actor, play director, theatre producer, private acting coach and emerging screenwriter who moved to The City Of Angels, Los Angeles, in 2005. He has worked in various aspects of Drama, and a variety of different kinds of Theatre, including professional summer stock, repertory, theatre for young audiences, radio drama, cable access television arts programming, regional and national touring, and most significantly, classical theatre performance. He is most noted as The Founder, Artistic Director and Producer of both the multiracial, non-Equity professional classical and contemporary chamber theatre, The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago and the multiracial video and theatre arts group, The Excaliber Shakespeare Company Los Angeles Archival Project. He led and operated his Chicago stage troupe for 15 years ( 1987-2001 ), and became noted as the co-writer, adapter and star of an original one-man show of the works of William Shakespeare and time-travel comedy, "A Bit of the Bard." He has led The ESC Los Angeles Archival Project since 2017 with the release of multiple theatre arts related video endeavors. Darryl Maximilian Robinson has been involved in over 250 live theatre and literary arts presentations around the country during the course of his five decade performing arts career, and currently seeks proper and professional agency representation for film, voice-over and television work. Having made his first appearance onstage on the West Side of Chicago in the role of Mr. Jones in the December 1973 Robert H. Lawrence Upper Grade Center production of "A Black Christmas Carol," Mr. Robinson's stage acting and play directing honors include: The 1981 Fort Wayne News-Sentinel Reviewer's Recognition Award as Outstanding Thespian Of The Season for a gallery of roles he played at northern Indiana's Enchanted Hills Playhouse ( including, most notably, Fagin in Lionel Bart's "Oliver!" ); a 1992 Certificate Of Honourary Membership Award bestowed by The Harpooners of the Sea Unicorn ( The Sherlock Holmes Society of The Greater St. Louis / Western Illinois Region ) for his direction and performance in the title role of Excaliber Productions, Ltd.'s staging of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holme: The Final Problem!" at The Midtown Arts Center of St. Louis; a 1995 Certificate Of Recognition from Chicago WKKC Radio's Critic's Corner for 20 Years Of Service To American Theatre; both a 1997 Chicago Joseph Jefferson Citation Award as Outstanding Actor In A Principal Role In A Play and a 1997 Chicago Black Theatre Alliance Award Nomination as Best Leading Actor In A Play for his performance as Sam Semela in the ESC's critically-praised revival production of Athol Fugard's "Master Harold And The Boys" at The Heartland Café Studio Theatre; a 1998 Chicago WKKC RADIO Critic's Corner Fine Arts Award for Outstanding Director Of A Play for his staging of the ESC's revival of Samuel Beckett's "Waiting For Godot" at The Heartland Café Studio Theatre; a 1999 Chicago Black Theatre Alliance / Ira Aldridge Award Nomination for Best Direction Of An Ensemble for his staging of The ESC's revival of Athol Fugard's "The Blood Knot" at The Heartland Café Studio Theatre; a 2001 Chicago Black Theatre Alliance / Ira Aldridge Award Nomination ( The Lloyd Richards Award ) for his staging of the ESC's revival of LeRoi Jones' ( Amiri Baraka's ) "The Dutchman" at The Harrison Street Studio Theatre of Oak Park, Il.; a 2013 Los Angeles Marcom Masque Theatre Award Nomination as Best Actor In A Major Supporting Role for his performance as the historic black educator and orator Booker T. Washington in the critically-praised 2013 revival of the musical masterpiece "Ragtime" at LA's Westchester Playhouse; and a 2016 Los Angeles Elate Season Ticket Holder Award Nomination as Best Actor for his performance as the debonair, but aging leading man, Ernest in Tad Mosel's "Impromptu" as part of The Emmanuel Lutheran Actors Theatre Ensemble - ELATE evening of four one-acts "Just 4 Fun" presented at The Lincoln Stegman Theatre in North Hollywood, CA. Darryl Maximilian Robinson also won a 2019 Broadwayworld Chicago Award nomination for Best Performer In A Musical or Revue ( Resident Non-Equity ) for his critically-praised portrayal of the dual roles of The Chairman Mr. William Cartwright and The Mayor Thomas Sapsea in the 2018 Saint Sebastian Players of Chicago revival staging of Rupert Holmes' Tony Award-winning Best Musical Whodunit "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" presented at the more than a century old St Bonaventure Church in the West Lakeview neighborhood of The Windy City. Most recently, Darryl Maximilian Robinson was named a winner of a 2022 Making The World Happening Award from Allevents.in for his numerous online theatre-related offerings during the early years of The Covid-19 pandemic. Mr. Robinson made his Greater Los Angeles Area Stage debut playing the role of the old Shakespearean actor Henry Albertson in the 2010 Hollywood Fringe Festival 50th Anniversary Revival Production of Tom Jones' and Harvey Schmidt's "The Fantasticks" at LA's Complex Theatre. He went on to be well-received by audiences with his portrayals of The Ghost of Christmas Present in a 2010 musical version of Charles Dickens' "A ChristmasCarol" and The Reverend Sykes in a 2011 staging of playwright Christopher Sergel's adaptation of Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird," both presented in-the-round at the noted Glendale Centre Theatre. Video selections of Mr. Robinson's critically-praised performances as Major-General Stanley in THE 2014 San Pedro Theatre Club revival production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance," and The Butler John Lawless in THE 2011 Glendale Centre Theatre revival production of Kyle Crichton's "The Happiest Millionaire" can currently be seen at YouTube, along with Mr. Robinson's half-hour interview as A Guest Actor during the second half of the 9-19-2016 edition of the internet television arts program "The Actor's Choice" hosted by noted arts journalist Ron Brewington. During the course of his more than five decade-long stage career Mr. Robinson also earned critical praise as an actor for such classic roles as Sir Thomas More in Director John Grassilli's 1984 revival staging of The University Players of The University of Missouri-St. Louis ( UMSL ) production of Robert Bolt's "A Man For All Seasons" at The Benton Hall Theatre; the title role in Director James Barushok's 1984 revival staging of The Stageplayers of Northeastern Illinois University of Chicago production of William Shakespeare's "Othello"; His Majesty, King Henry II of England in his own 1992-1993 staging of The Excaliber Productions, Ltd. revival of James Goldman's "The Lion In Winter" at The Wabash Triangle Cafe in St. Louis ( the first documented staging of the work with a multiracial cast ); and mystery writer Andrew Wyke opposite gifted actor Sean Nix as Milo Tindle in his own 2000 30th Anniversary Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago Revival staging of Anthony Shaffer's Tony Award-winning Best Play "Sleuth" at The Harrison Street Galleries Studio Theatre of Oak Park, IL. ( the first documented staging of the work with an all African-American cast! ). In June of 2017, Darryl Maximilian Robinson appeared as District Attorney Flint in The ELATE revival of Ayn Rand's classic courtroom drama "Night of January 16th" at The Lincoln Stegman Theatre. Of his work in the show, theatre critic John K. Adams in the June 7, 2017 edition of The Tolucan Times And Town Crier wrote: "...Robinson leads the talented cast, playing the prosecuting district attorney with style and wit." During Christmas week of 2019, Darryl Maximilian Robinson released two different video versions of "The St. Crispin's Day Speech" as The King in William Shakespeare's "Henry V," one shot outdoors on the steps of the historic Lincoln Heights Jail in LA, the other shot indoors at in undisclosed location in the same Lincoln Heights neighborhood.
