Bio:

Joris van Gennip is a Dutch photojournalist based in Amsterdam, working worldwide on social issues, human rights, and daily news. His work explores intimate, up‑close visual narratives about people on the margins — from refugees on the Aegean islands and families rebuilding after disasters to LGBTQ+ communities and everyday life in the Netherlands.

In recent years, he has covered major international events including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the devastating 2023 earthquake in Türkiye , and large‑scale pro‑Palestine demonstrations across the Netherlands. His photographs have appeared in publications such as De Volkskrant, Trouw, The Guardian, VICE, BuzzFeed News, and in campaigns by NGOs including Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the Red Cross.

Over the past decade, van Gennip has developed a consistent personal signature: empathetic, immersive photo essays that seek connection rather than spectacle, often produced independently and later published by national and international media. He is a multiple Zilveren Camera award‑winner, receiving recognition for series on the Limburg floods, the aftermath of the Peter R. de Vries attack, and the refugee crisis in Greece. In 2025 he received the public prize for Regional News Photo of the Year for his image of climate activists blocking a cruise ship in Amsterdam.

Regular editorial clients include De Volkskrant, Het Parool, Trouw, Het Financieele Dagblad, Panorama, and Nieuwe Revu. He also collaborates with international NGOs and advocacy groups on long‑term projects surrounding human rights, migration, and the climate crisis such as Amnesty International and Greenpeace
