All images are made public and can be used, even without requesting prior authorization, citing the Author in the credits as reported in the caption of each image.
If you intend to use the images in academic publications (papers and articles), books and magazines, communication via private message as well as a hard copy of the publication itself or in PDF format, as a personal archive, is appreciated.
I periodically update older images with new versions obtained from other data or remakes, so it is better to use the most recent versions rather than the outdated ones published on Wikimedia Commons and other platforms (some are more than 10 years old).
For scientific publications I am able to produce specific images on request, using my own material or from public archives. In this case the collaboration will necessarily have to be negotiated.
Due to some abuse I discovered, I have removed some full resolution images and replaced them with smaller sizes. A notice in the caption specifies that the Full-Image can only be obtained upon request via message and for reasonable reasons.
ESSENTIAL BIO
Giuseppe Donatiello (b. 1967) [ orcid.org/0000-0003-2536-5092 ] is an Italian amateur astronomer, astrophotographer and author. He is the leader and principal investigator of the National Deep Sky Section - Unione Astrofili Italiani (UAI), the main and oldest national amateur astronomical organization since 1967 [ www.uai.it/sito/ricerca/ ].
He has so far discovered 11 nearby dwarf galaxies, two of which are in the Local Group. He is the only amateur astronomer both to have galaxies named after him and to have discovered new galaxies in the group of which the Milky Way is part.
In detail:
2016 - Discovery of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy about 9.9 million light years away, called Donatiello I. This was historically the first galaxy to be named after an amateur astronomer [1].
2020 - Discovery of an ultrafaint dwarf galaxy called Pisces VII / Triangulum III, 2.9 million light years away, found to be a satellite of Triangulum (M33). This is historically the first galaxy in the Local Group discovered by an amateur. At the time of discovery, it was the first satellite discovered in the M31 group after 13 years [2][2 bis].
2021 - Discovery of three new satellites of the galaxy NGC 253, distant on average 11.5 million light years [3].
2021 - Discovery of a distant satellite of M31 called Pegasus V / Andromeda XXXIV, 2.25 million light years away. To date, no other dwarf galaxies have been identified in the Andromeda group, so Peg V is the latest [4].
2024 - Five faint dwarf galaxies found in the DESI Legacy Survey, satellite candidates of NGC 253: Donatiello (Do) V, VI, VII, VIII and IX.
This new study was also led by David Martinez Delgado and is already available on the ArXiv platform: arxiv.org/pdf/2405.03769
To these discoveries must be added five candidate planetary nebulae [Donatiello Source (DoS) 1, 2, 3 and 4 and DoS Object 1 [DoS 1/PN-G 238.8+00.9, DoS 2/PN-G 241.0+03.1, DoS 3 /PN-G 285.1-06.8, DoS 4/PN-G 045.0-21.9][5] and a few dozen stellar streams in Milky Way-like galaxies as part of a study program led by Prof. David Martínez Delgado (IAA) [6].
Over the years he has taken part in international observation campaigns, including the International Halley Watch, and proposed names for minor bodies and planetary structures.
He is the author of over a thousand popular, technical and scientific articles [7].
He has received dozens of photographic awards (APOD, EPOD, POTD etc.). For his particular merits he was awarded the UAI "G. Ruggieri" Award for 2022. IAU Dark Sky Ambassador [8]
