Berkeley Social Welfare is one of the oldest and most prestigious social work graduate programs in the nation, with a mission to improve the lives of vulnerable individuals, families and communities.
Known for combining academic rigor with outstanding practice, Berkeley Social Welfare offers MSW and PhD programs as well as an undergraduate major. Since 1944, the School has prepared more than 11,000 social work professionals for leadership positions in the public and nonprofit human service sector. These caring and committed individuals work tirelessly to meet the growing needs of low-income families, seniors, foster-care youth, the homeless, individuals with mental illness, veterans, the disabled population, school children, hospital patients,domestic violence survivors, immigrants and refugees.
Our alumni are leaders in health and human service sectors: from elected officials such as Congresswoman Barbara Lee to innovative directors of county social service departments and community-based organizations, to those who provide direct service on the front lines, creating caring communities for all of its members.
The School has been consistently ranked among the top social work graduate programs in the nation and is number one in per-capita faculty productivity (research). Members of the faculty are nationally and internationally recognized as leaders in their fields, conducting cutting-edge research on the major issues facing California, the US and the world.
Through its Center for Social Services Research, professors and graduate students conduct research to identify best practices, design innovative social interventions, and improve service delivery.
