There are three kinds of photos here. Firstly there are a selection of photos taken mainly in the 1980s, with a few in the early 1990s. I come from a long line of railwaymen, which afforded me access at an early age to Doncaster Plant Works, where a few photos are taken. I became a railway signalman when I left school and the more informal lineside access available to staff in those days enabled me to obtain shots which would not have been possible to members of the public.
The early pictures are taken with a pretty cheap 110 format camera, with all the limitations that brought. The better quality later shots are taken with a Fujica STX-1N with a 50mm lens, initially on Konica colour negative film (a couple are on Fujicolour but I disliked the colour rendering so didn't continue with that brand), then Kodak Gold - generally 400ASA. The B&W material is all Ilford FP4 125ASA. For metering I disliked the integral light meter of the Fujica and pretty soon moved on to a separate Euro Master meter..
The second kind of photos have been taken in recent years of classic traction on mainline duties. As some of the early photos hint I was heavily into the bashing movement of the 1980s but moved on to other things at the end of the decade when loco hauled passenger traffic started to seriously wane. I still do a little bashing of classic traction when mainline opportunities present themselves. These are digital images and really only snaps, taken with a Canon IXUS30 until the end of 2015.
Enthused by the reaction to some of my photos, at the beginning of 2016 I bought a Sony RX100 MkI in order to explore once again some B&W photography. Any traction photos from this date onwards are taken with the benefit of this better camera (mostly colour) and the album of Railway Landscape Photography is my B&W work. I'm generally not enthused by the modern traction scene so these are pictures of railways - current and disused - in the landscape.
I hope you enjoy these photos. I am usually amenable to the use of my photos with an appropriate acknowledgement for non-commercial use. If you want to use them in a book etc I'm happy to come to some arrangement and do better rescans of images from negs. Please ask first.
