My name is Ed Kaas. I was born in Wormerveer (The Netherlands). I grew up in Amsterdam. I started with photography in earnest when i was 16. I got a Praktika Super TL2 for my birthday. It was my dad who thought it was a good idea to for me to take up photography. He decided to start developing and printing himself in a little darkroom in our house. From that moment on i never gave up on photography.

It made a good combination with our other passion: Steam locomotives. My dad had taken some pictures in the 1960's and 70's with an Agfa Silette, some of which can be found in the album DB steam. Now we decided to make a journey to Austria in search of steam (1979), the results of which were developed and printed by ourselves. This trip was a huge success and many more followed to the D.D.R., Hungaria, Spain, and Poland.

The pictures of these ventures have been scanned and processed by me and can be found in several albums on this site.

The majority of the pictures was taken with the Nikkormat FT-N with a 50mm lens. My dad and i both owned one (after we used the Praktika Super TL2 and a Praktika upgrade: The MTL3). The Nikkormat FT-N truely is a legend in its own right making high quality pictures. The camera is now some 50 years old and still functions..... Japanese craftsmanship, made by hand.

Later on i bought a small Olympus digital camera - the first step into the new digital era. I used it mainly for family shots. Still later on i bought the Nikon D40 which was a good camera for it's day. I took a lot of pleasing pictures with it. Then i upgraded to the Nikon D5100 which was a big difference. I also used the Nikon D5200 which is a little better still.

Recently i bought the Nikon Z5 which to my mind is a major step forward.

But it's not about the camera, it's about the person who's holding it. Trying to create something rewarding is the thing i try to achieve and which gives me immense pleasure. Taking good pictures is all about having a good eye for a nice composition. I try to make good on this aspect.

Anyway, taking pictures and processing them is my main passion - i never grow tired of it. I hope you'll find some stuff you like on my site. I never take pictures with other people's taste in mind - i just shoot what i like and if no one else likes it that's not a problem for me. I think that is the essence of photography: Trying to capture an image to the best of your own knowledge and taste.

Thanks for visiting - Ed.
