I am a junior at Polaris ELS, currently enrolled in Cree’s photography class. This is the extent of my photography experience and hope to further advance through higher-level classes as well as individual work.

For me, photography is all about people. Portraits are simply easier to manipulate and cultivate to one’s own taste than landscapes, for instance. I enjoy the nonverbal communication of photography that comes with capturing the subtlest of body language and expressions. This not only captures the mood of the person, but if you’re lucky, a snippet of their character as well. Inanimate subjects are rarely awkward or crazy or ecstatic; at least, not to the degree of human subjects. That is not to say that landscapes and props do not play their role. Although I enjoy the controlled setting that studio lights provide, I much prefer real, nature backdrops. I believe it both makes for a better portrait and a better atmosphere during the session.

I have not found my preferred camera of choice, due to my limited photography experience. I often use a Canon or Nikon from school, and an Olympus Penn at home. I try to utilize the vast options provided by the Olympus Penn to properly execute a photo, though I try to avoid the art filters and save the editing for last.

I am still trying to find my place in photography. I have not yet discovered my own personal style. I would consider this to be one of my main personal goals, in addition to evolving the more technical skills that come with operating a camera.
