Originally this Flickr page was a record of the annual plant and insect cycle of life in Brisbane city in the state of Queensland in the southeast of the state which is a Northern
Australian state with updates of personal interest. Brisbane is an interesting city as it is city that has northern and southern Australian plants, animals and insect communities intersecting.
Some photos have now been used commercially.
On this photographic journey the first serious 35mm film camera used was an old well used Leica 111c camera that was a 21st birthday gift that had previously been used at the ANU Physics labs in Canberra. The 111c was used when bush walking, mustering cattle travelling in the saddlebag and overseas. The next purchase was a Contax 139 Quartz camera a very capable 35mm SLR camera system.
The renewed interest in photography was rekindled with the passing of my father in 2006 with the inheritance of many wonderful old German lenses. Wally was a very competent scientific photographer having an international award in this field from a British university that can be verified.
The lenses Wally used for recording his medical research used for making color films, slides and prints were passed on to me. My wife's father Lindsay also had some great 35mm Japanese lenses that were gifted to me when he died with his area of scientific research being in entomology at the highest level at the CSIRO.
With this inherited legacy there has been a voyage of discovery at times tinged with sadness when not being able to thank Wally or Lindsay for this gift after seeing what these old lenses are capable of. The lens collection has expanded resulting in selling some cameras and lenses to fund lenses with particular qualities and to reduce the number of lenses at any one time. Many lenses may only be owned for a year or so and then sold to a photographer who may be on a similar photographic journey of discovery.
Wally was a great mentor with his photographic knowledge and we would develop and print all my black and white photos.
The switch from film to digital photography occurred in 2011 firstly using a digital Canon camera as it appeared digital and film were comparable performance wise ultimately settling on the Olympus micro 4/3rds system in 2014 suiting my style of photography.
You will notice a theme of experimentation with legacy lenses to create artistic photos with results that interest me.
With macro photography if possible you will often see a photo taken with a legacy lens and or a modern macro lens for comparison.
My mother and her family coming from a farming background instilled in me a keen interest in and a love of nature particularly the plant kingdom.
Having a farming and now horticultural background helps nurture a holistic knowledge of natures cycle of life and it's diversity.
With Flickr groups that I have the honor of being an admin I usually expect equal or better quality for any of my best photos as a guide. I have not had free kicks from Flickr Explore for 4 years only having Flickr Explore photos to get established on Flickr from August 2014 to May 2016. I mention this so you will understand the standards required for any group that I am an admin for.
Updates, have a few photos in Explore recently in May 2020 so the Explore search algorithm has been updated with credit due the new Flickr owners.
Have very few photos in Explore now in 2024 and that is fine.

Arendt invites us to ask: given what we know about climate change, at what point does enabling the exploitation of coal, oil and gas resources – through exploration, mining, direct use or export – embody culpable moral complacency?
Such decision makers will defend their actions as legal, state-sanctioned, pragmatic, based on market signals, meeting social need. They are presently afforded legal immunity because of their apparent distance in space and time from the devastation they are causing but don’t “intend”.
Yet perhaps they should be considered responsible, in Eichmann-like ways, for these new crimes against humanity and against other species.
