The Oakwood Public Safety Department is very unique in that all officers are qualified in police, firefighting and emergency medical services.
Oakwood's Public Safety Department is unique in that law enforcement, fire protection and emergency/rescue services are all performed by the same personnel. This consolidated operation employs thirty full-time officers who have been trained, certified and sworn as peace officers in addition to receiving training and certification as fire fighters and emergency victim care technicians or paramedics. Created in 1924, Oakwood's Safety Department is the second oldest continuing consolidated department in the country.
The department operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week with full-time, paid personnel. The department is administered by the Public Safety Director who assumes the duties of both Police and Fire Chief.
