Artist Statement

In my work I strive to maintain an emotional intensity by using vivid complementary color and texture to describe the mood and the liveliness of a scene. I am influenced mainly by the German expressionist and neo classical painting in subject matter. I am currently working with the figurative form abstracting it to get my own take on their inner psychology; it’s not a likeness that I am trying to capture but their emotional presence. I tend to place my subject into new surroundings sometimes real other times imagined. I have also been using still-life to practice modeling form and understanding how light can be reflected. Light is an important part of my work by using a variety of mediums such as oil pastels, acrylic paint, and charcoal I can handle the effects of light in provocative ways, maintaining a rich texture.

Recently I have been making paintings based on composition I have constructed using collage techniques, by using various materials construction paper, magazines, and old books to enter a state of free association. Where I can arrange objects in a way free from having to plan out how the image will take shape in a natural and somewhat accidental way. By doing paintings in this manner I can access phobias and fears I may be dealing with and how they emotionally effect how I process the world around me.
