Information

Founded in 2005 as a research GmbH, the MFPL are a unique combination of a high quality research institute and a teaching and training facility for young scientists. Currently, the MFPL host around 60 independent research groups, involving more than 500 people from 40 nations.

The MFPL are jointly funded by the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna. The two universities provide space, scientific infrastructure and cover the costs for administrative staff. Around 70% of the scientific personnel and the running costs are covered by third-party funding (national and international research grants) raised by the MFPL group leaders.

MFPL scientists participate in the undergraduate curricula for students of the molecular life sciences of our partner universities. Each year, they invest around 1200 hours to educate and inspire new generations of scientists. A thematically focused international PhD program and the “VIPS” international Postdoc Program, which includes career development support for Postdocs, reflect our focus on postgraduate education and training. The MFPL also offer Junior Group Leader positions – starting positions for young researcher who want to establish their own lab.

Located at the Campus Vienna Biocenter (VBC) a major Austrian “hot spot” in Life Sciences, the MFPL provide a stimulating and collaborative research environment. Furthermore, our scientists are supported by centralized scientific facilities offering cutting edge services.

The MFPL were named after the Viennese-born biochemist Max Ferdinand Perutz, who emigrated to England after graduating in Chemistry from the University of Vienna. In Cambridge, he helped to set up the “Laboratory of Molecular Biology”. He was awarded the Nobel prize in Chemistry together with John Kendrew in 1962, for their studies of the structures of globular proteins.
