For me, art is a balancing act: one that straddles the line between innovation and tradition, natural and handmade, and conscious and unconscious. From the process to the product, my artwork skirts the boundaries of the unexpected and creates pieces that are uniquely representative of myself.
The balancing begins with the inspiration, one that is jointly shared between the natural and the manmade. It is my goal to replicate line quality, form, and texture that can only be seen in naturally occurring beauty. However, I am jointly influenced by symmetry and line quality that can only be found in manmade creations. The contrast between the manmade and the natural results in a process that is equally as traditional as it is innovative. In creating these ceramic works, I used traditional elements of texture and line, but highlighted them through slab-rolled cylindrical forms and distinctive selection of both glossy and matte glazes. Through these interactions of opposing lines and textures, I hope to celebrate those elements of beauty on the surface of my ceramic forms.
While I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both these standard and non-standard practices, my unconscious is the undisputed project manager. The concrete, repetitive nature of ceramic making allows for several fortunate accidents, ones that allow my unconscious to shape my work. While the way I consciously work highlights unique arrangements of line quality, shape, and texture, my unconscious adds grace to the finished product.
While these ceramics stand for only a small portion of my artwork, they represent the intricate balances – from the initial inspiration to the finished product—contained within my artwork as a whole. These themes of contrasts, whether intentional or not, enable others to identify with my work, regardless of the medium.
