Drag to set position!
English by birth, New Zealander for nearly 15 years, I'm happily 'dual-citizen' but have undefinable yearnings for the far East. Japan in particular fascinates and intrigues me, hence the photos inspired by Japanese aesthetics.
I'm not an accomplished photographer and own only a 'point and shoot' but my camera is always in my bag ....ready. It is often in my hand at the ready. If a shot is worth taking, I may take 10 shots of that image. One will always be better than the others! Bracketing but also common sense!
Many of my photos are 'reportage'. Many represent a kind of diary (the 'selfles' for instance). Many attempt to tell a hidden story. Some are me enjoying 'doing' art. The Indian writer and philosopher Tagore was criticised for doing weird and risky art (which was not in keeping with his role-model public image). He responded to this criticism by stressing that his painting represented one of the few opportunities for him to be 'arty' and 'naughty' (irresponsible) at the same time. Bravo Tagore.
Why the rain shot as my cover photo? Because to me it's 'yugen' and 'shibui' and 'enso' (circle). Rain to me also suggests life's big paradoxes. Find yourself in a rainstorm with someone you love and suddenly the wetness, coldness and discomfort of the rain are forgotten. And of course doesn't 'better' always come after the rain?
And why philosopherinamist? Because one of my heroes, Samuel Taylor Coleridge described himself in that way. I have been able to relate to many of the more profound experiences of his life.......so.......onwards.......in a mist! Rain again.
Oh and if you're Japanese I hope I've not misrepresented
a cherished concept too much. I am using artistic license!
