I am an amateur artist who has been painting and drawing since I was fourteen. In 1949 I joined the evening art classes at the Bermondsey Men's Institute - since the War open to both men and ladies. The following year, 1950, I joined David Bomberg's evening art classes at the Borough Polytechnic. David Bomburg was one of the foremost pioneers of modern art in the UK. In early 1952, I spent one term full time at the Central School of Art in London. There I was one of five students who attended the very first class of Richard Hamilton who took a course in Organic Art.
At the BMI I attended two evening classes. One tutor there, Eric J Mellon introduced me to Impressionism and the art of Matisse - Eric is now a potter with an international reputation who developed new methods of firing pots. The other tutor Alex Fryer, introduced me to Modern Art and Picasso. At that time, very few people appreciated modern art in the UK. At David Bomberg's classes we drew and painted in a very tactile and direct manner. From Organic Art, I have attempted to look at underlying structures. From those times on my Art for the years that followed undertook many experiments. Each attempting aspects of the various approaches.
For many years I was also an amateur athlete. In 1961 I ran One Mile (on cinders) in 4 minutes 3 secs. I started work aged fifteen. In my twenties I returned to full time education. On graduating I taught maths, games and commerce in schools. For many years before retirement I was a teacher of economics at a college of technology. Three years ago, in an attempt to show my artwork, I commenced photography and processing and later joined the Flickr Community.

I have known Bill for several years now on Flickr and have enjoyed his works and sense of humour. He works well in both black & white and in colour in a contemporary fashion and one can see his dedication to colour, form, and line. I enjoy the journey he takes us on. Please spend a little time enjoying his work.
