I posted a testimonial to Ilsebatten, Ilse for me, some months ago and I now feel the need to update it (end July 2008). When I was a newbie to Flickr I loved it immediately. But, to tell the truth, without some luck, it is not so easy to spot photographers whom you can learn from and who become, through their frequent comments and messages, a helping hand and a stimulation to go further on. I have had the luck to find Ilse on my path and this warm and enlightening relationship now goes much beyond the technical aspects of photography. Ilse had impressed me with her macro photos and her splendid flowers. But she excels at other genres: portraits in B&W or color, landscapes and seascapes (can we say riverscapes?). Then she impressed me and delighted me with her humor and her wonderful storytelling abilities. But the reason I feel the need to actualize my testimonial is that, in the last few months, Ilse has been, with an incredible vitality and originality: - exploring new techniques: she does some superb post-treatments - exploring her own country: she brilliantly introduces it to us, accompanying her photos with very interesting captions and comments: local people in all realms of the South African society, remarkable women, costumes, traditions etc... The photographer is also a reporter and a journalist! What a treat! Visit Ilse's stream and you will immediately understand that you have found not only a great photographer but simply and more importantly a remarkable woman! Dear Ilse, thank you for your friendship! That said, I can declare with confidence that what I've seen and read, I admire. Consequently, as I write of Ilse in this space, I'm faced with the inherent temptation of inflating her seen-from-afar qualities to hyperbolic levels like a trowel-happy mason slopping down a triple thickness of his best mortar, ie: future Nobel Prize winner...heir apparent to Mother Teresa...a genius to eclipse Van Gough's, blah blah. However, I shall refrain. Instead, let me simply say Ilse is a wonderfully intelligent, witty and gifted Arteeste whom I feel privileged to know. (According to rumour, she also sings in the supermarket to remember the shopping list, which I like even better.) Thank you, Ilse, for your always gracious words and engaging pictures. Ilsebatten is one of the most talented photographers I have had the priviledge of knowing. She not only a very talented photographer, she is an artist in every way. She has the unusual ability to create art with any subject. Her talent is so diversified, ranging from breathtaking macros, beautiful landscapes, to truly awesome portraits. But her work goes a step beyond and expresses her love that is so clearly seen in the faces and expressions of her subjects. I have seen her love expressed in the faces of the little unprivileged children that she gave her all in photographing, in order to tell their story to the world. All of us would like to make a difference, but Ilsebatten is making a difference.
