Just moved from Buffalo, NY to Troutman, NC, which is about 30 miles north of Charlotte, NC. Our wooded property backs up to Lake Norman State Park. Birding-wise, I am still getting used to the switch from North to South; everything is reversed! This winter, I see these common NC winter birds daily - pine siskins galore, Carolina chickadees, brown headed and white breasted nuthatches, robins, hermit thrush, blue jays, tufted titmouse, mourning doves, white throated sparrows, chipping sparrows, cardinals, several very handsome and aggressive eastern mockingbirds, Carolina wrens, pine warblers, juncos, a pair of pileated woodpeckers, crows, red-bellied woodpeckers, house finches, ruby kinglet, many Eastern bluebirds, and more. On our road, I've seen a loggerhead shrike, a great horned owl and many red shouldered hawks. We also have a herd of deer (about 10; varies) each night in our backyard, along with raccoons that rattle the bird feeders every night. There is also a pack of coyotes that live in the Park that we frequently hear howling at dusk.
