I believe that art is an expression of emotion that can never be perceived in the same two ways. In my mind the observer has as much a part to play as the artist themselves. The thought process, or lack of one, is the crucial border that defines a masterpiece from a simple piece of art. Therefore art should be created to provoke sentiment; it should challenge the audience, leading them to think conceptually and to remove themselves from their comfort zone broadening their perspectives as a result.
The artists that inspire me challenge the fundamental principles and concepts of art, for example Tracey Emin and her piece ‘My Bed’ provoked me to reconsider whether art is simply a thought process rather than display of technical skill and ability. Other artists include Holton Rower, Jason Martin and Frank Bowling, who challenge the process of ‘painting’ and in turn regenerate paint itself as a medium.
I am interested in the exploration of a variety of different media. In one of my final pieces I used resin to cast miniature drawings and ink suspended in ice cube shapes. This served as a starting point for my discovery of multimedia techniques, quickening my interest in experimenting with a wide range of mediums and techniques.
Partaking in life drawing classes has enabled me to draw from the human form spontaneously and quickly, whilst also completing detailed drawings incorporating mark making and textures into my pieces. Work experience in an architect’s practice allowed me to experience creating three dimensional plans for upcoming project on both the computer and out of foam board.
Being accepted onto and Art Foundation course would allow me to explore my own techniques and develop my ideas with the support of the tutors and peers. I feel that working in this creative environment would allow me to thrive and for my own style to evolve.
