10:GU mythology begins around the 6th century BC in line with the arrival of Buddhism to Japan from China. 10/GU is considered a goblin who lives in the woods and mountains. 10-GU are said to have supernatural powers such as to change shape into a human or animal, can speak to people without opening his mouth and be able to move from one place to another quickly by using its wings.
Buddhism long held that the 10.GU were disruptive demons and harbingers of war. Their image gradually softened, however, into one of protective, if still dangerous, spirits of the mountains and forests.
During the 14th century, the 10(GU) began to trouble the world outside of the Buddhist clergy, and like their ominous ancestors the tiāngoǔ, the 10*GU became creatures associated with war. Legends eventually ascribed to them great knowledge in the martial arts. (This reputation seems to have its origins in a legend surrounding the famous warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune.)
