Hello and Welcome.

I once came across the following anonymous quotation that describes my feelings about photography perfectly - "I think a photography class should be required in all educational programs because it makes you see the world rather than just look at it."

I grew up in the once-bustling steel town of Steelton, PA, and developed a mild interest in photography as a child that I never fully developed. I've lived in various townships with Mechanicsburg addresses since 1986, and it wasn't until after my divorce that I decided I really needed to find a hobby, and that initial interest in photography faded back into view.

Once I took up the hobby in earnest back in the late 1990s, I saw details in my environment I'd never noticed before. Everything was a potential picture, even when I didn't have a camera with me, and my observation powers increased significantly.

The time I could devote to the craft ebbed and flowed as I raised my children, but now retired and living only with my wife, I've rediscovered the joy and enthusiasm that accompanied my entry into the field.

I started with Pentax film cameras and moved on to Pentax DSLRs, but lately I've found that shooting with the all-in-one Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 satisfies my needs and is very easy on the back, so it's become my tool of choice. I enjoy many genres, but particularly like the meditative aspect of wildlife photography, where patience is most definitely a virtue.

I shoot primarily for my own amusement, but am greatly flattered when any of my captures is enjoyed by someone else. If, per chance, someone would wish to purchase one of my shots, my website, billjphotography.com, through Fine Art America, has a purchase function.

Other than this site, I'm not much into social media, and hate the reciprocity aspect of it. This is why I rarely 'like' a photo. I've simply seen far too many unspectacular shots with 99+ 'likes' simply because the photographer dishes out 'likes' to others like candy at Halloween. So, I don't expect anyone to 'like' my photos, though, like most of us out here, I do hope my work is enjoyed by those who view it.

Thanks for visiting me on flickr.
