I'm a Zoologist by training and a former Biology teacher. I have always liked the unpopular in nature, especially reptiles, amphibians and spiders. As time has passed I have become hooked on macro photography and especially the challenges and rewards of photographing tiny subjects such as jumping spiders, slime moulds and springtails. I am also getting dangerously close to more traditionally popular subjects like birds and orchids. In fact if it looks interesting and is from the natural world I will try to take its picture. I am a true Jack of all Trades, and have enormous respect for those who specialise and strive for perfection in one small aspect of nature photography. I don't have the patience or dedication myself, being a butterfly chasing one subject after another... I used to say that I did hardly any post-processing and I still firmly believe that a photo should come out of the camera as perfect as you can make it, but inevitably there is plenty of post-processing in the world of macro photography, especially with the unbelievable technology of focus stacking which lets you have your cake and eat it, in terms of high magnification combined with reasonable depth of field. All my stacks are handheld and I like to try to prove those who argue that you can't focus stack living specimens in the wild under natural conditions wrong : ) I use Laowa (Venus lens) macro lenses and enjoy using the fully manual control that they allow. I am also keen on dragonflies in flight - if Birds in Flight is 'BIF' then dragonflies in flight fully deserves the acronym 'DIF', because DIF is for difficult! Please enjoy my photos but if you want to use them (for books, articles and exhibitions) then do ask me first, thank you!
