Goldenberg's Delicatessen Closed
The first time I came here (early 90s), this jewish delicatessan in Rue des Rosiers was full of customers being served and waiting to be served with all sorts of delicacies. There were bullet holes in the windows from a grenade and machine-gun attack in 1982 in which 6 people lost their lives and 22 were injured. I remember seeing it on the news. The blood, broken glass and white sheets covering the victims' bodies. And a sign the next day saying "La Vie vit toujours" - life goes on. The bullet holes had been preserved with a plaque to commemorate the victims. No one claimed responsibility and no culprit was ever found.
Goldenberg closed 2 years ago and, I learned, the site is due to be occupied by a fashionable clothing chain store. La Vie vit toujours?
