Notker Balbulus

This is Notker Balbulus, a C10th Benedictine scholar from St Gallen in Switzerland. Most famous for his contribution to the development of music in liturgy, and for his "De Carlo Magno" biography of Charlemagne, he is depicted in iconography with a book in one hand and in the other a broken stick with which he beats the devil in the form of a dog. The devil is supposed to have assumed this form for the specific purpose of tempting the Blessed Nokter so it is probably right and proper that he gets a thrashing for it.
