Before and after: a new connection at SR 509 in Tacoma
The SR 167 Completion Project in north Pierce County builds 6 miles of new highway between Puyallup and SR 509 near the Port of Tacoma.
The project created new connections at SR 509.
On the left is how the area looked in May 2023 showing northbound and southbound SR 509, a nearby building and grassy areas. The photo on the right was taken in March 2026, showing major changes. A new bridge crosses over SR 509. It will carry SR 167 traffic to southbound SR 509, which is also going to be moved to the left closer to the northbound side. Close to the building visible in the corner, there's a new ramp to the future SR 167 expressway. This connection will provide freight haulers with a direction connection between I-5 and the port. This will remove a significant amount of truck traffic from local streets.
The SR 167 Completion Project is part of the Puget Sound Gateway Program. The Puget Sound Gateway Program combines the SR 509 Completion Project in south King County with the SR 167 Completion Project in Pierce County to complete critical missing links in Washington State’s highway and freight network. These projects provide new connections to the state’s ports, improve freight movements and reduce congestion on local roads and highways.
