Here is a side-by-side comparison between a fox sparrow (Passerella iliaca) of the sooty variety and a song sparrow (Melospiza melodia). The song sparrow is more vividly striped and mottled, and the fox sparrow appears to have some yellow coloration on its beak that is absent from the other bird.
