Devil's Gate
Located between Gold Hill and Silver City, the Devil's Gate was a large narrow reef of metamorphic rock that served as the main landmark for travelers arriving at the Comstock Lode, giving
"a forcible impression of the unhallowed character of the place," J. Ross Browne - 1860.
In 1850 John Orr and Nickolas Kelly discovered a gold nugget near this spot, launching the first wave of miners to the area. During the Paiute War it held a small fort with fake cannons.
