A sub-herd of Yellowstone's wild elk, especially at calving time, stick around the buildings and people in Mammoth because, it is hypothesized, dangerous predators like wolves and bears are unlikely to come hunting for the vulnerable calves in the presence of so many people. The calves are born on the lawns and parking lots of the private residences and park service buildings in the historic district, hub of tourist activity at Yellowstone's north entrance.
