At Appomattox Court House National Historic Park—an old safe in Woodson Law Office (circa 1851). Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to the Union commander, Ulysses S. Grant on 9 April 1865 at Appomattox. This did not end the Civil War as many later surrenders of armies were to take place throughout the South before the conflict was finally over.
Appomattox Court House National Historic Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places 15 Oct 1966; reference ID 66000827.
