[A series of six monochrome images] A sign at the site (in front of the Lynchburg Public Works Department , Lynchburg, Virginia) reads: "This model 1474 Gallion [sic] Roller built in 1922 was used to construct roads in and around Lynchburg, Virginia. It's basic use was to compact base stone but was also used to compact asphalt. It was donated to Lynchburg's Public Works Dept. by Lawhorne Bros. Asphalt Co. in loving memory of M. T. Lawhorne."
The firm, the Galion Iron Works of Galion, Ohio, was founded in 1907 and specialized in road-building equipment. Though bought in 1929 by Jaffrey Manufacturing Company, the Galion name continued in use. In 1973 Galion became part of Dresser Industries. The name Fordson appears on a part of this roller; I assume Galion made use of a Ford Motor Co. part in production of its machine. I lack the knowledge to describe the mechanical aspects of the equipment.
