Yellow form of native Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja affinis, Scrophulariaceae)
This is the pale yellow form of native Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja affinis) in the Scrophulariaceae plant family growing on the hillside across from our mailbox today. The yellow "petals" are mostly leafy bracts, and the real flowers are the slender yellow tubes with protruding pistils. (San Marcos Pass, 25 March 2012)

These yellow flowers are unusual, but not uncommon. You can sometimes find them if you look for them where the plants are growing.
