Little golden Syrphid Flower Fly (Syrphidae, Diptera) on Wild Blackberry (Rubus ursinus, Rosaceae)
This is a little golden Syrphid Flower Fly (family Syrphidae, order Diptera) perched for a moment on a leaf of Wild Blackberry (Rubus ursinus) in the Rosaceae plant family. This is a deep crop from my original photo. Insects have been scarce in the woods in this drought year, and it seems harder than ever to get close. Or am I just getting older and less sure? Nah! Our house is about 2,500 feet in the mountains, and the marine layer fog came up to 2,200 feet today. It was clear, but we had some "fog winds" caused by the turbulent air at the upper side of the temperature inversion. The winds came and went. I got my photos during moments of relative calm.
