(the lower half of) Between Here and There

Between Here and There , Tim Lowly © 1988, tempera on panel, 24" x 35". Private collection.

I posted this painting on Instagram ( www.instagram.com/timlowly/ ) this morning and I was reminded by my friend Jeremy Botts that when I was making the painting I had very intentionally referenced Andrea Mantegna's painting "Lamentation over the Dead Christ". Incidentally the medium I was using–egg / oil emulsion tempera–at the time (roughly 1986 - 1999) was essentially the same medium Mantegna used. Tempera has a very methodical / constructive technical character. The resulting paintings sometimes have a rather stone-like quality: exemplified in Mantegna's work.
