CHRIST LEON-THREE CHRISTS OF YPSILANTI

The Three Christs of Ypsilanti is a book by Dr. Milton Rokeach, based on a social psychology experiment he worked on in the 1950's. Ypsilanti State Hospital, Ypsilanti, Michigan was home to three gentleman diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Each gentleman held the delusion that he was Christ. The experiment brought these three men together daily for an extended period of time. Dr. Rokeach was interested in whether the three men being brought together would diffuse the delusions..or whether one of the gentlemen would maintain the delusion...What happened was all three maintained their belief that they were Christ...the delusion shifted to accommodate each one...all three maintained the delusion...but they did develop a relationship of sorts...unusual in paranoid schizophrenia...the book is astonishing, and not a light read..it is graphic in it's descriptions of the religious, political, and sexual ideation. It is also difficult because today the experiment would never be allowed. There are 17 boxes of original notes in Michigan at University which detail this experimental psychology, but the notes are redacted and blacked out in large amount to accommodate HIPAA laws.

Leon Gabor was in his mid to late thirties and described as looking in life like a beautiful "Hollywood" Christ..with arresting eyes and shoulder length hair. My interpretation is based on 11th-12th century Sicilian Mosaics which I find quite beautiful. The next piece is CHRIST CLYDE..the third will be CHRIST JOSEPH...all very different men. It was thought at one time that Leon was showing signs of giving up the delusion, but in the end he held fast. Although he is now deceased there are people diagnosed with a psychosis who, after having read the book, or found an Internet group..believe he is in fact the Messiah.
