Sean

Recently I blogged about a new project that I am starting called $2 portraits. The idea is that I will offer $2 to anyone who asks me for money from now on in exchange for their portrait.

This afternoon I ran into Sean in front of the Chevy's Restaurant at Van Ness near Golden Gate. Sean was panhandling and asked me for some money for food and so I told him about my $2 portrait project and he agreed to pose.

Sean's 51 and has been in San Francisco for about eight years. He said that he was originally from Maryland. I asked him if he liked San Francisco or Maryland better and he said San Francisco -- he said the weather was warmer.

I asked Sean where his favorite place he ever lived was and he said Las Vegas. He said not for the gambling, but just for the city.

Sean doesn't have any kids. He does have an aunt who lives in San Jose, but he said that she was going through a hard time right now with a divorce.

Sean asked to see my photo of him in my camera after I photographed him. He said, "hey, that's not bad, I do look pretty beat up though." I told him that I thought he looked great and took a great portrait. He asked me if I was going to put a book out of these portraits someday. I told him I wasn't sure but that I didn't have any immediate plans to.

With that Sean said thanks for the $2 and I wished him well and headed on my way.
