Unlike some of the more gourmet chowders, this seafood version is very basic due to its origins. The recipe came from a friend's father and was what he cooked for his crew on his boat when out fishing for days on end during the 1930's and 40's. Where most recipes call for fresh milk or cream, this one calls for evaporated milk simply because fresh was not available out at sea in those days. This recipe is a real crowd pleaser. This little rusty barn in Sitka, Alaska serves up a great bowl of seafood chowder! I had 2 bowls! They also have a little section of souvenirs. I bought a little plush Humpback Whale.

Amazing chowder with scallops, haddock, lobster and potatoes from La Cuisine Robicheau, Saulnierville, Nova Scotia, Canada.

This chowder, captures all the bounty, that the cold waters of the North Atlantic have to offer. It might be the only restaurant in North America that gives you a fork for your chowder.

I do usually leave the food photography to Laura, but here's one from me for a change. I went out to Makro this afternoon, and whilst I'm there I usually check out the fish counter (because I'm usually on the hunt for reduced, late date smoked salmon ;)).

Today I spotted something that I just had to have for lunch.

My first trip to the States was with Dave and we went to Boston. Whilst there he had a massive hankering to try some authentic New England Chowder - I think it may have been Moby Dick insipred. Anyway, we did and it was fabulous!

Due to the various taste sensitivities in my household seafood chowder is something I really love but very, very rarely eat.

When I spotted this pot of salmon and mussel chowder I just had to have it!

And it was delicious.

One of my favorite meals ever: seafood chowder with a hunk of crusty bread in Kilkenny, Ireland. Topped off with this brownie and coffee. I was so full.

Tides Restaurant makes a seafood chowder loaded with large hunks of halibut, shrimp, scallops, lobster. It makes a very filling meal. The taste was good and it was quite enjoyable. (via Foodspotting)

This is what we came for. The Black Stump is famous for their steaks. It had been twenty years since my last visit and I was not to be disappointed. The steaks were very thick, juicy and a slight char flavour. The garlic prawns were very tender and had lots of flavour. The asparagus were cooked to perfection and married well with the bernaise sauce. Having the chips in a side dish was a great idea. They were perfectly crisp and great for mopping up the bernaise sauce. We rated this meal 18/20 which equals 4 and a half stars out of 5.

The best part was using our presidential card to have the cost of one Surf&Turf main taken off our bill. Alternatively we could have printed out this coupon .

Seafood Chowder $6.90 x 2 = $13.80

Surf'n'Turf $28.90 2for1 = $28.90

Carafe of wine (moselle) $11

Trade missions are a critical part of British Columbia's strategy to diversify its international trading partners and secure new investment, propelling economic activity and job creation throughout the province. They're an opportunity for BC ministers to meet with overseas companies and governments to promote BC's competitive advantages.

Minister of International Trade Teresa Wat joined award-winning BC chef Nathan Fong to demonstrate how to make West Coast Seafood Chowder at the China Fisheries and Seafood Expo, the largest seafood expo in China.

Nova Scotia’s Oldest Pub

Our story began a long, long time ago. Some say it was in 1761, others believe it was 1769. What we know about the Fo’c’sle is part legend, part rumour, and written by those who have passed through our doors.

Smoked seafood chowder, chili oil...

This seafood chowder is full full full of a variety of fresh seafood and freshly made.

Generally I try to stay away from clamcakes.

Some feel like they are still sitting in your stomach 2 weeks later.

These are light and delicious and full of tender clams.

They offer a cup of chowder & clamcakes for $5.99. The seafood chowder is a dollar more - & worth it.

I had it before, so I sprang for a bowlful!

Manhattan Style Seafood Chowder with Crusty Bread and Saffron Aioli at Four Square Restaurant in NC.

My own personal recipe -

In a large dutch oven or broth pot gently melt 2/3 cup butter in 1 litre of half cream and one can of evaporated milk. Add 2 tbsp minced onion allow to slowly come to boil. in a second pot, add 2 pounds of your favourite seafood - haddock, scallops, shrimp, lobster - to about 2 cups of water and bring to boil. In third pot, boil up cubed potato and diced carrot. The seafood and potato should be ready about the same time - put them aside. While your butter / cream is boiling, thicken it up with a corn starch slurry ( 1/2 cup in enough water to dissolve ) spiked with about 1/8 tsp of cream of tartar. It will thicken quickly so whisk it until it is very, very thick, smooth and silky. Add the fish with broth and the potatoes and carrots ( drained ). Carefully but briskly mix it all together. Add one can of whole baby clams with liquid. Put on lowest heat and leave for about 20 min, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Taste. Add salt if needed. Want to simulate a little 'Tartar Sauce' flavour ? add a tsp of Tarragon and about 1/8 tsp of dill weed.

Happy 2009 Everyone !

Earl & Angelo's Steakhouse entered a seafood chowder; it was, by far and away, my favourite soup of the day. Clams, mussels, crab, crispy bacon, green onion, potatoes, and garnished with a lovely home-made crouton.

Yes, it is definitely soup season. In the past while I've made Creamy Mushroom, Cream of Chick Pea and this Chowder. We love hot creamy homemade soups when it's cold and it's been very cold here.
