Calendula (Calendula officinalis) "Pacific Beauty" from San Diego Seed Company. Also known as the pot marigold, ruddles, common marigold or Scotch marigold, the calendula a flowering plant in the daisy family Asteraceae. Calendula's golden-yellow flowers are both medicinal and beautiful! Bees and butterflies love them too! Growing in my San Diego garden
These beans are from my harvest this week.
On my little farm I strive for genetic diversity in all my crops. I purposely collect, trade, and plant a wide variety of open pollinated, non-GMO seed of each vegetable and fruit to encourage cross pollination.
Each year I save and replant my own seed, which has become more and more adapted to my hot, dry locale, while adding in a healthy percentage of new seed.
This is known as landrace gardening, and if you google the term you can find out more about this ancient but little known practice. I believe it is the answer to world wide food security.
The continual inbreeding of so called 'heirlooms' (and in the case of things like potatoes, actual cloning) only weakens the ability of a crop to survive environmental change and disease.
The majority of commercial seed available to the home grower today is either proprietary hybrids that beholden the grower to continual purchasing from the seed company, or left over seed that was developed for mechanized agriculture where conformity and shelf longevity have been chosen over taste and beauty.
A garden--much like a society--is stronger with diversity. And, it's also more beautiful and interesting!!

Another beautiful and inspiring issue of Taproot is out in the world: SEED. This time I wrote and illustrated a conversation with Ken Greene from the Hudson Valley Seed Library about heirloom and open-pollinated seeds and the important work of seed-saving. Can't wait to check out the rest of it when it lands in my post box! www.taprootmag.com/
Tithonia rotundifolia WW33 Sunflower s3- (Sunflower) Mexican Sunflower Heirloom, Mature plant size: 5ft., 4in. orange flowers, USDA Hardiness Zone HA, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed s3 for 93 DAYS (Victory). Planted in 2022.
Victory Seed: This wildflower is native to Mexico and Central America. The plants are erect, can reach six feet in height, has leafy stems with leaves that are large and triangular shaped. They have bright orange flowers that are four inches wide with multiple flower heads per stem. Attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.
Prefers well-drained soils in a sunny location. Heat and drought tolerant. Makes a great cut flower and terrific at the back of beds and borders. Thin to 18"
Each packet contains 0.5 gram, which is approximately 45 seeds. 2022note: the one in G2 snapped off, probably due to wind. Seems somewhat brittle. Started seed indoors, 3 seeds per 4" pot. Rather than thin, I planted 3 plants together. Worked really well, tall and very full.

Richard Sniezko in RV1 western white pine trial, standing next to trees from Mech X family (open-pollinated family of parent 05081-003) with a blister rust infected alternate host Ribes adjacent. Happy Camp, California.
More from Richard Sniezko:
Of the >4500 parents evaluated over a 50 year period, parent 05081-003 expresses the highest (or among the highest) level of quantitative disease resistance (partial resistance) in both seedling inoculation trials and in the field tests.

Loved the vigor and the spread of the Hubbard varieties (blue and golden orange) although the vines were favorites of the squash vine borers and I had my fair share of squash and cucumber beetles, too.

I tilled under about 20 wheelbarrow loads of bedding with manure from my sheep using a KingCutter tiller powered by a Kubota tractor. I then marked five rows each 50 feet long and three feet apart. Furrows were dug using a triangular hoe. I use the long planks to keep from walking on the soil and compacting it

I save a lot of heirloom and open-pollinated seeds from our garden to save money and preserve qualities I want in future crops like this tasty herb, Sweet Basil. It is a favourite because we love pesto and use it regularly in so many dishes. I have multiple plants growing so we can harvest from more than one in rotation.
I set this one aside to go to seed so I could save them for another season. I show others how to seed save at workshops every month - it's a simple but important skill everyone can learn. Read more at www.themicrogardener.com/growing-your-own-food-from-seed/.
If you are not already saving your own seed from your garden and would like to get started, rather than selecting hybrid varieties, instead look for open-pollinated, heirloom and certified organic seeds from reputable seed suppliers. Read more at themicrogardener.com/saving-and-sourcing-open-pollinated-....
Heirloom tomatos can be found in a wide variety of colors, shapes, flavors and sizes. Some, like the one in this photograph, are bi-colored. They are deliciously sweet and loaded with robust flavors. The medium to large in size are excellent for making thick slices for sandwiches. When in season, I wouldn't buy any other.
Heirlooms are grown from seeds that are usually over 50 to 100 years old and have been passed down through generations (thus the name "heirloom"). They are 'open-pollinated' plants meaning that they must be pollinated by the wind, insects or birds....and, not man. Heirlooms didn't become commercially available until about ten years ago. Today, there are over a hundred varieties and the list grows longer each year.
This flavoursome herb is a favourite in my garden so I let this plant go to seed so I could save them for another season. (themicrogardener.com/growing-your-own-food-from-seed/). Incredibly tasty light lemon flavour that's perfect in pesto or with any seafood or chicken dish, salads or just to nibble in the garden!
I save a lot of heirloom and open-pollinated seeds from our garden to save money and preserve qualities I want in future crops.
If you are not already saving your own seed from your garden and would like to get started, rather than selecting hybrid varieties, instead look for open-pollinated, heirloom and certified organic seeds from reputable seed suppliers. I'm still waiting for most of my seeds for Seedy Sunday on March 2nd... That's where islanders from far and wide meet to exchange saved, open-pollinated, mainly heirloom variety seeds, plants and tips. Since I'm going 100% non-hybrid for the first time, I'm *a little bit* in heaven knowing what awaits me there...
However, I did find a nursery in town that carries West Coast Seed packets this weekend and I could not help myself, I had to buy just a few. It's purely psychological, I needed these babies to come home with me, even if I don't intend to plant until the first week of March...
