This is the remains of Castle Moil - of a viking princess who watched the loch by the Isle of Skye. When the vikings got chased out and married a highlander. There was a toll, when you didn't pay she'd raise a big chain from the water and sink the ship.

From the 15th century Macdonald clan chiefs occupied castles across Skye, from Dunscaith and Knock in Sleat to Duntulm in north Skye. In 1690, a house originally located near our museum was attacked by warships and burnt to the ground in retaliation for Macdonald support of the Jacobite cause. Flora Macdonald was later married here in 1750.
The building you see today comprises three phases. The oldest part is the white wing, the remains of a mansion house built in the 1790s. In 1815 Alexander Wentworth, 2nd Lord Macdonald, commissioned James Gillespie Graham to design an extension in the fashionable Gothic style. The new Armadale Castle was built to take advantage of the magnificent views across the Sound of Sleat. In 1855 a fire destroyed the central part of the original mansion house. A new middle section was built to replace it, designed by David Bryce.

Armadale Castle on the Isle of Skye is a 19th-century mock-Gothic mansion built for Clan Macdonald, moving from older fortresses like Duntulm, suffering a major fire in 1855, and being abandoned in 1925 before becoming a romantic ruin managed by the Clan Donald Lands Trust.
Early Origins and Clan Roots:
15th–17th Centuries:
Clan Macdonald settled in Sleat, initially using older strongholds like Dunscaith and Knock Castle. By the 1650s, chiefs used Armadale as a residence.
1690 Fire:
An earlier house at Armadale was burned down by government forces using a naval warship after the chief supported the Jacobite cause.
18th Century:
Famous figures visited the estate, including Flora Macdonald in 1750 and writer Samuel Johnson with James Boswell in 1773.
Construction and Rebuilding:
1790 Mansion:
A new white mansion house was built facing the Sound of Sleat.
1815 Expansion:
Architect James Gillespie Graham added a grand Tudor-Gothic mock-castle wing for show and prestige rather than defense.
1855 Fire and Bryce Wing:
A severe fire destroyed the middle part of the building, prompting architect David Bryce to design a replacement central wing.
1925 Abandonment:
Due to rising upkeep costs, the Macdonald family moved out to a smaller home on the estate, leaving the building to decay...
