We were up in the Houston area for a wedding shower and decided to check out the famed bolivar peninsula. We got up early and headed out to high island. This sunrise backlit shot of a great egret was one of the first shots I took after setting up.
Every year I return early in the morning to the same spot to see what variations the sea and the sun have made to one of my favorite scenes
When you see how fragile and delicate life can be, all else fades into the background.

As you can see the Kingfisher's eye is protected by a membrane (knipvlies in Dutch). Despite the membrane the Kingfisher can stil see under water.

Like many other churches in the area, the colonial church of Chinchero was built on ancient Inca ruins like many churches

Like most of Galapagos, Sombrero Chino (Chinese Hat) is volcanic in origin. The exploration path starts with a gorgeous beach, bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs and marine iguanas. The path goes past a colony of endemic Galapagos sea lions before passing a lava field: look for the lava cactus growing in the cracks. On the beach, keep your eyes open for the American Oystercatcher, a wading bird with a distinctive orange beak. On the trail, you may see lava lizards.
