Panoramic view from the Sassal Masone (Grisons, Switzerland) with the Piz Palü, the Palü Glacier, the Lago Palü and the Poschiavo valley.

On a sunny autumn day in the Morteratsch Valley/Graubünden/Switzerland, at the end of which the miserable remnant of the Morteratsch glacier can be seen.

About 100 years ago, the whole valley was filled with several kilometers of this glacier.

Man glaubt es kaum, aber in dem See kann man schwimmen. Ich war so ca. 20 mal drinnen. In der unglaublichen Sommerhitze tat das richtig gut so eine Abkühlung. Das Wasser war ca. 12°C.

"Lago Bianco (literally "White Lake") is a reservoir at the Bernina pass in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It has an elevation of 2,234 m (7,329 ft), a length of 2.85 km (1.77 mi), a surface area of 1.50 km2 (0.58 sq mi) and a maximum depth of 53 m (174 ft). Once the site of two smaller lakes (Lago Bianco and Lago della Scala), the current reservoir was formed by the constructions of two dams (Scala and Arlas) at its southern and northern ends. The current lake drains to the south, as did both its precursor lakes, with its water eventually reaching the Mediterranean via the rivers Poschiavino, Adda and Po. By contrast, Lej Nair, just below the northern dam. drains north into the Black Sea via the rivers Inn and Danube.[1][2]

The summit of the Bernina railway line, which is the highest mountain crossing railway in Europe, runs alongside the eastern side of the lake, with the Ospizio Bernina station at roughly the mid-point. The road across the Bernina pass (Hauptstrasse 29) follows a higher route on the same side of the lake. Most of the lake lies within the municipality of Poschiavo, although the most northerly section and the northern dam lie within the municipality of Pontresina.[1]

The Lago Bianco reservoir was created between 1910 and 1911 in order to provide a constant supply of water to a series of hydro-electric power plants in the Val Poschiavo. It has a maximum volume of 18.6 million cubic metres (15,100 acre⋅ft). Initially water was discharged into natural watercourses as far as a power station intake at Cavaglia that fed the Robbia power station [de] at San Carlo. However, in 1927 two power stations were built between the lake and Cavaglia. The highest of these, the Palü power station [de] at Lago Palü, is now fed by a pipeline from the southern end of the reservoir.

There are current proposals to construct a pumped storage scheme based on Lago Bianco and the Lago di Poschiavo some 1,270 metres (4,170 ft) below. This would involve creating a 18.1 kilometres (11.2 mi) long tunnel high along the western side of the Val di Poschiavo, followed by 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) long shaft to an underground power plant on the banks of the Lago di Poschiavo. This would have a total installed capacity of 1000 MW and would consume electricity to pump water to the higher level at times of low demand and release water to generate electricity in times of high demand. The scheme would involve raising the dams at either end of Lago Bianco by 4.35 metres (14.3 ft). The proposals have received formal consent from the cantonal authorities, but as of 2016 are not believed to be financially viable.

One more shot of Lai da Palpuogna in Grisons / Switzerland. It’s just too photogenic to post only one or two photos 😉

High above the Rhine Valley (north fork, rr. Surselva) are beautiful small villages with original little wooden houses (dt. Walserhäuser) with flowers in front of their windows and balconies and tight lanes. It seems that time stands still if it weren't for the modern days cars that are everywhere around for which it's hard to find parking lots in all this tightness. Every once in a while when you get a glimpse into these houses because a door or window is open, you realize most of these houses look old on the outside but are renovated and very modern on the inside.

One such Rhaeto-Romanic village is Ladir and its church thrones outside the village on a platform. I find it looks awesome in this mountain environment, but see yourself...

Ospizio Bernina is a station on the Bernina Railway line between St. Moritz in Switzerland and Tirano in Italy. The station lies on the shores of Lago Bianco, near the Bernina Pass, between the Engadin and the valley of Poschiavo, in Graubünden

Its narrow-gauge railroad is the sole rail link from the St. Moritz region to Italy, providing the highest regularly scheduled train service in Europe at this site. (Wikipedia)

This beautiful alpine lake is located in a forest. It is very pristine with a lot of debris of fallen trees and big rocks from a huge historic landslide.

Honestly, I'd move there in an instant. (During the summer, that is 😅)

The best time of year at a mountain lake in Grisons/Switzerland.

Zur besten Jahreszeit an einem Bergsee in Graubünden/Schweiz.

After the first night in the Hotel Preda Kulm/Bergün /Canton Grisons, the mountains were in the most beautiful light.

So windows open, tripod and camera build and take pictures, because experience has shown that this spectacle takes only a few minutes in the sky.

The picture is a 16:8 cut of a large panorama of 9 vertical pictures a' 110 mm.

I recommend double-clicking for extra large view!

It's good to see that these meadows in the Alps seem to be still intact. In the lower regions you hardly ever see a meadow with a lot of different flowers, due to enormous production pressure which leads to 5-7 cuts per year, which doesn't help bio-diversity...

As photographers, you know, that usually it doesn't help a lot to take great pictures when it rains. Of course you don't like it when the sun shines plain down either...yes, we are a spoiled species... ;))

But this 'rainy day in July' was just perfect to take pictures of this picturesque lake...

Klosters is a Swiss village in the Prättigau, politically part of the municipality of Klosters-Serneus, which belongs to the political district Prättigau/Davos in the canton of Graubünden. Klosters has a Tundra climate (ET) under the Köppen climate classification. The average annual temperature is 2 °C.

The valley of Avers is a side valley of the Hinterrhein in the canton of Grisons. The community of the same name is situated at and above 2000m above sea level, the associated hamlet of Juf is considered the highest year-round populated area in Switzerland.

Lake Cauma (dt. Caumasee, rr. Lag La Cauma) is one of quite a few marvels in the Surselva area of Grison Switzerland. This lake has no tributary, water is ground-fed and thus filtered and crystal clear. During the winter when water is kept back as snow, there is not much ground water and the water level of the lake is low.

Summer twilight time , The Diavolezza , Val Bernina , Graubünden , Switzerland. No. 8152.

"The Diavolezza (in the local variant of Italian, She-Devil) is a mountain in the area of Pontresina in Graubünden. It has a height of 2978 m and is located southeast of Munt Pers (3207 m).

The mountain can be reached by cable car from Val Bernina, the Bernina Pass valley. At the base station of the cable car on 2093 m there is a train station (on the Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB)). At the summit, there is a restaurant with a panoramic terrace, as well as a hotel offering both hotel-class and bunk-style accommodations.

The Diavolezza is one of the ski areas of the Upper Engadin (from 1'896 m to 3'066 m). The skiing area is connected to that of Piz Lagalb, which lies on the opposite side of the valley. The two areas are usually marketed as one, called Diavolezza-Lagalb. The Diavolezza-Lagalb area is known for its difficult slopes, all red and black, as well as the good snow conditions lasting often as long as May. Especially popular is the difficult 10 km slope down the Morteratsch Glacier to the Morteratsch railway station (the slope on the glacier is marked and secured).
