Merci beaucoup Lawrence for inviting me to participate in this and inspiring this image.

As 2022 draws to a close, I am looking forward to turning the page on this year, which has been a difficult one for me, and starting the new chapter that is 2023.
There are a few lines from a Josh Groban song called "Thankful", that I have always loved:
Even with our differences
There is a place we're all connected
Each of us can find each others' light
For me, Flickr has become a beautiful place to find that light and that connection, especially in a world that seems to grow increasingly dark and troubled. So I want to share a deep and sincere Thank You to all my Flickr friends and contacts for the light you give and all the ways in which you uplift my spirit. Thank you for sharing your talents and creativity which both awe and inspire me, for sharing your beautiful places, special moments, and great adventures, for your thoughtful and generous support of my photography and writing, and most of all for your personal kindness, caring, and humanity. I truly enjoy all of the conversations, comments, and connection with each of you, and am incredibly thankful for your encouragement and good wishes through some of the tough times this year.
I am profoundly grateful to have met such wonderful people here on Flickr. Because in the words of the incomparable Maya Angelou in the poem below,
"Nobody, but nobody, Can make it out here alone.
I wish each of you health, happiness, and beautiful light (both in photography and life) in the new year ahead!
Alone
by Maya Angelou
Lying, thinking
Last night
How to find my soul a home
Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
And I don't believe I'm wrong
That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.
Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.
There are some millionaires
With money they can't use
Their wives run round like banshees
Their children sing the blues
They've got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone.
But nobody
No, nobody
Can make it out here alone.
Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.
Now if you listen closely
I'll tell you what I know
Storm clouds are gathering
The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,
'Cause nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.
Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.
How generous you are, Earth,
and how strong is your yearning for your children
lost between that which they have attained
and that which they could not obtain.
We clamor and you smile; we flit but you stay!
We extract your elements to make cannons and bombs,
but out of our elements you create lilies and roses.

If you‘re into older lenses it seems to be a good idea to not give up on them too quickly and grant them a second or third chance… they might surprise you! This lens came, quite beaten and somewhat strange looking, and when it didn’t shine during the first testshots, I put it down, thinking it just might not be worth the effort. But because it‘s part of an upcoming article I‘m working on, I decided to use it a bit more in order to get a more consistent impression. Glad to admit my initial impression seems to have been completely wrong. It turned out to be a very interesting, capable and unique little lens.
Maybe it would be a good idea to extend that generosity to fellow humans as well… but what do I know about them? 😅

Happy week to you dear friends! -
The Throne Hospital was established due to the generosity of the Martin family, whose wealth was derived from the Shrigley flax spinning mills. Samuel Martin conceived the idea of establishing a children's hospital in a rural district close to the City of Belfast.
Although he died in 1872, his philanthropic wishes were honoured: 28 acres of land were purchased and a children's hospital with 32 beds was built at a cost of £4,000 to the designs of the architect T. Hevey. It opened to patients in 1874.
The site must have been wonderful back then - situated on the lower escarpment of the Cavehill, and commanding an uninterrupted view of Belfast Lough. Today the building has been converted to offices, confined to a cramped site, and surrounded by the Greater Belfast urban sprawl.
In the first annual report of the Throne Children's Hospital for year ending 1876, it is recorded that 121 patients were admitted, of whom 44 were deemed cured, 41 relieved, 29 incurable, 4 died and 3 were discharged for bad conduct!

Keep lifting one another up.
Keep shining bright, everyone!
These gorgeous handmade ornaments were given me by a generous, grand and artistic friend! Though there are 4 photos, two of them are a view of the same ornament. These three glorious creations are on the Christmas tree at Riversong, our Alabama home on the Elk River. The other three are on the Christmas tree at Lagniappe, our home in New Orleans! I couldn't not bear to leave all in New Orleans, and I expect the other three will be coming back here to reside on the big tree for the rest of the holidays! But OH! How we are enjoying them on each tree! Such sparkle to catch the eye, and remind us of those we love!

A few weeks back a very generous soul called the secretary of our camera club and offered to the club a donation of a suitcase full of analogue camera equipment. One of the cameras included was a medium format Zenza Bronica SQ-A camera along with two lenses, an 80mm and a 200mm. As the only film shooter in the club I volunteered to go through all of the equipment and do my best to give it the once over to see what it might all be worth.
The Bronica is not an insubstantial camera, big and heavy and basically a Japanese version of the much better known Hasselblad 500cm. The fact that it copies the Hasselblad design in no way should be seen as detrimental to what the Bronica is capable of. It is a fine camera with a very good reputation among analogue enthusiasts. I was tasked with selling the equipment on eBay on the club’s behalf and because any older film camera is worth more if it’s been film tested I thought it my duty to take it out and shoot a few rolls of film through it. 😇
This then was the 2nd picture I took with it and to say I am mildly impressed is an understatement, it takes great pictures and the 80mm lens is especially good. I’m happy to report that the camera worked like clockwork and the pictures it produced are in no way inferior to what any of my more expensive Rolleiflex cameras are able to produce. I’ll be sad in a way to see it go but for a cash strapped camera club the funds it provides us may keep us just about afloat for a couple of years to come.

Yes, I like a generous foreground. It gives the viewer a place to stand ‘inside’ the picture.

True belonging is not passive. It's not the belonging that comes with just joining a group. It's not fitting in or pretending or selling out because it's safer. It's a practice that requires us to be vulnerable, get uncomfortable, and learn how to be present with people without sacrificing who we are.
Dr. Brené Brown
Belongingness entails an unwavering commitment to not simply tolerating and respecting difference, but to ensuring that all people are welcome and feel that they belong.
John A. Powell
Today, if we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
Mother Theresa, Saint Teresa of Calcutta
The most important thing in all human relationships is conversation, but people don't talk anymore, they don't sit down to talk and listen. They go to the cinema, watch television, listen to the radio, read books, update their status on the internet, but they almost never talk. If we want to change the world, we have to go back to a time when warriors would gather around a fire and tell stories
Paulo Coelho
We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say, ‘It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.
Fred Rogers
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.
Winston Churchill
When we choose to wonder about people we don’t know, when we imagine their lives and listen for their stories, we begin to expand the circle of those we see as part of us.

We must remain hopeful that a universal ethic of courage, caring, sharing, respect, radical compassion, and love will make a difference. We can never be too generous or too kind.
Marc Bekoff
I believe that we are here for each other, not against each other. Everything comes from an understanding that you are a gift in my life — whoever you are, whatever our differences.
