Einu sinni bjó kona nokkur í Hraunsási. Hún átti tvo sonu stálpaða; auðug var hún að fé.
Einhverju sinni fór hún og allt heimafólk hennar til kirkju upp að Gilsbakka. Vóru þá sveinarnir tveir einir heima og tók hún þeim vara fyrir að fara ekki frá bænum meðan hún væri í burtu.
En þegar fólkið var farið í burt ætluðu drengirnir að elta kirkjufólkið og fóru norður ásinn. Þeir komu að boganum, en það er sagt að boginn var mjór og hátt ofan að vatninu, en foss undir.
Sveinarnir tóku þá höndum saman og leiddust. Fóru þeir þá út á bogann og ætluðu yfir ána. En þegar þeir komu út á miðjan bogann varð þeim litið niður fyrir sig. Þá sundlaði þá er þeir sáu í iðuna undir boganum og féllu út af niður í ána.
Þegar fólkið kom heim aftur fundust sveinarnir hvergi. Móðir þeirra lét leita að þeim, en allt kom fyrir eitt, sveinarnir fundust ekki. Hún frétti þá hvernig á stóð; því einhver átti að hafa séð til sveinanna, en orðið of seinn til hjálpar.
Reiddist þá konan og lét höggva bogann af ánni með þeim ummælum að þar skyldi engi framar lífs yfir komast. Fossinn heitir síðan Barnafoss.
The waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss are beautiful and unusual natural phenomena. A large number of travellers make a specific point of visiting these natural treasures. The Hraunfossar Falls are clear, cold springs that well up through the lava and run in falls and rapids into the Hvítá River. Barnafoss has been evolving through recorded history, as the river has dug itself down through the lava and runs in a deep and narrow ravine. There used to be a stone arch spanning the river, forming a link between the districts of Hálsasveit and Hvítársíða. The following story relates the reason for the name "Barnafoss" (Children's Falls):
Once there lived a widow on the farm Hraunás. She was well off and among her possessions was the farm Norðurreykir in Hálsasveit. She had two children. They were quite young when this story took place. There came a time when evening services were to be held at Christmas at Gilsbakki. The Mistress of Hraunsás and all her folk, except the children, attended the service. The children were told to stay at home and play. The moon was shining and the weather was fine. When the people came home the children had disappeared. Their footsteps led to the stone arch over the river. Their mother had the arch destroyed, saying that no man would ever be allowed to cross the falls alive. She later donated to the Church at Reykholt the farm Norðurreykir, in memory of her children

The old abandoned farm Hallbjarnarstadir is west of lake Mývatn, N-Iceland.
An old friend sent me this story about the farm. Sorry, but I'm not good enought to translate it to English. Those who read and understand Icelandic will enjoy it.
"Bræður tveir, Helgi og Örn, sem báðir voru piparsveinar allt sitt líf bjuggu saman á jörðinni þar sem þeir höfðu alist upp. Þeir ákváðu sem ungir menn, vel innan við þrítugt, að skipta jörðinni milli sín. Varð að samkomulagi að annar skyldi skipta og hinn velja. Helgi skipti en Örn valdi. Þeim sinnaðist hins vegar við skiptin, bjuggu eftir það hvort á sínum landpartinum, en töluðust aldrei við eftir það! Bjuggu sem sagt hlið við hlið piparsveinarnir og bræðurnir í einhver 50 ár eftir þetta án þess að svo mikið sem nokkru sinni yrða á hvorn annan. Byggðu sér sitt hvort húsið og kepptust við að rækta garða sína sunnan undir húsunum. Hvor ætti flottari garð varð eitt af þeirra keppikeflum í þögninni. Það sem er skemmtilegast við þessa sögu er ástæðan fyrir vinslitum þeirra bræðra. Það var sem sagt Helgi sem skipti en Örn sem valdi og eftir að Örn hafði valið ákvað Helgi að tala aldrei við hann framar vegna þess að hann valdi "vitlausan part"!"
