One of our most numerous (population estimates peg numbers at over half-a-million in North America) but also most seldom seen of owls, the Northern Screech Owl (Aegolius acadicus) is quite skilled at what it does. And, what it does, is hide. During the day, it hides from would-be predators by roosting in tightly-branched spruce trees. Typically it does this low, hanging out at between six and twelve feet off the ground. During the night, it hides from its prey, sitting quietly and listening, waiting. Unsuspecting mice and voles never see--or hear--this tiny, seven-inch-tall predator coming!
This week is "fat bear week" in Alaska. I don't think this coastal brown bear has the needed girth to win.
This Grizzly takes a seat to contemplate the coming winter. I was amused to see this as I watched this and another smaller bear go about their daily routine. This bear looks like it's added some fat to help it last through hibernation.

Dicke Berta (Leuchtturm)
Die Dicke Berta ist ein Leuchtfeuer in Cuxhaven-Altenbruch.
Der an der Elbemündung stehende denkmalgeschützte Leuchtturm war als Unterfeuer von 1897 bis 1983 in Betrieb.
im Volksmund als „Dicke Berta“ genannt.
Dicke Berta (lighthouse) popularly known as "Fat Berta".
The Dicke Berta is a Beacon in Cuxhaven-Altenbruch.
The listed lighthouse, which stands at the mouth of the Elbe, was in operation as a lower light from 1897 to 1983.

Just a leisurely stroll down the beach. The belly isn't quite touching the ground yet but it's getting there. I'm not sure which bear this is (clue me in if you know) but surely must be a contender in this year's Fat Bear Week contest, celebrating the bears of Katmai National Park. Lots of detail here, if you want to zoom in you can see all the bugs circling its head and the sand kicked up by its massive paws.

A chicken sticker spotted on a lamppost that looks hand-drawn with a brush, among other random stickers. Coincidentally, the Fat Chicken fast food shop is only about a hundred metres away.

Our squirrels here in Austin suffer from a little bit of an obesity problem.. semi tame, fat and happy.
