For the first churchly visit of that November 2023 trip to the southern French provinces of Roussillon and Languedoc, I will treat you to a truly unique place, the so-called “priory” of Serrabone, which features an absolute world-class masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture: its tribune.
I said “so-called” above because a priory, in the genuine acception of the word, is a secondary monastery established by an abbey. It is populated by monks sent by that abbey. Those monks are led by a prior, whose superior is the abbot of the founding abbey. In the case of Serrabone, there first was a late Carolingian parochial church established in this mountainous locale and first mentioned in writing in 1069. The walls of the nave are, for some part, still those of that ancient church.
It was then, at a time when local lords used to meddle more and more in the affairs of the Church (which was one of the reasons that prompted the coming of the Gregorian reform), that the viscount of Cerdagne and the local lord of Corsavy installed on the Serrabone mountaintop an unusually mixed group of canons and canonesses to live in accordance with the Augustinian Rule.
A new college church was built (mostly by enlarging the previous one) and consecrated in 1151. Its architecture is harmonious but very simple, as one would expect: in the Middle Ages, those mountains were populated (hence the creation of the parish) and did feed their inhabitants (serra bona in Catalan means “good mountain”), but there was precious little commerce with the outside world and the locals had nothing of real value to export. Therefore, the local economy was pretty much a closed circuit and money was far from flowing in abundantly. The style of the church, even though there were donations from the aforementioned lords, reflects this paucity of financial resources.
It is therefore a total mystery how the magnificent sculpted tribune, which would have cost a veritable fortune, was funded, and by whom. Nothing has ever been demonstrated in that matter, although many have conjectured in various directions. The only certainty we have is that it was built around the time when the church itself was completed, i.e., the mid–1150s.
The culmination of the “priory” did not last very long: canons and canonesses are not monks and nuns, their commitment is found throughout history and places to be much less strong, and by the late 1200s they had already broken communal life and begun to live in their own separate homes. Decadence went to such extremes that the “priory” was secularized by the pope in the 16th century and made a dependency of the chapter of the cathedral of Solsona. The last “prior” died in 1612 and the church returned to its simple parochial status.
The place was progressively abandoned as people left the mountains to go live easier lives in the valleys. It was almost in ruins when it was listed as a Historic Landmark in 1875 and the restoration began. Fortunately, the tribune had been protected and its capitals and columns hidden by the locals.

Chartres probably has the finest collection of medieval stained glass to be found anywhere in the world. Of the 186 cathedral windows, about 150 of them have most, or all, of their original 12'th and 13'th century stained glass. Almost all of the glass survived the wars of religion, the French revolution, the second world war (when it was temporarily removed in 1939) and the ravages of nature and time.
Chartres glass is famous for its vivid colours. The blue, called "Chartres Blue", which is compared to the blue of the autumn sky, was created by mixing cobalt salts. Copper was used to make green, and gold in the manufacture of red. Paint was used to create other colours and for details like facial features. It's all held together by lead framing in the massive window frames of this finest of Gothic cathedrals.
The patterns of light in the individual windows, as well as the general pattern of light in the cathedral change from hour to hour, season to season. To really appreciate it's magnificent medieval artwork takes multiple visits. I visited only once, for about an hour, and it was an overwhelming experience. This panel had some good ambient light and was the best example of the glass that I could photograph.

Instructions:
Fold the sheet of purple romance card in half with the print side out.
Cut 48mm from the right hand edge of the front panel and stick to the inside back panel.
Cut a 5mm wide strip of mirri paper and stick beside the romance card on the back panel.
Stick layer 1 of the decoupage to the mirri paper and trim to leave a 2mm border all around it.
Stick this onto the pearl lavender card and trim to leave a 2mm border around this too.
Stick the panel onto the card front with a 15mm gap to the left and top edge the right edge will overlap the panel and should not be stuck.
Add the rest of the layers to the decoupage design.
Mount the heart and swirl panel from the decoupage sheet on the pearl lavender card leaving a 2mm border.
Add the wording to the small panel using the peel-off letters and stick this, by the left side only, to the front panel as shown in the picture.

Instructions:
Select the green rose paper and the orange foiled stripe paper from the pack. Trim a strip from the green rose paper to 55mm wide and the stripe paper to 85mm with the stripes going along the length.
Trim both pieces to 138mm deep, stick the peach to the right hand side, leaving a border of about 4mm top, right and bottom.
Stick the green rose paper to the left side, matching the top, left and bottom borders, it should fit perfectly but if it overlaps a little it will not matter.
Add a loopy stitch border to the left edge, place it so a little of the green shows between the paper and border in each loop.
Add another to the right side of the green rose strip.
Stick the green basket panel on to the green card and cut to leave a 2mm border all around it.
Stick to the card using sticky fixers.
Stick the round banner onto green card and cut to leave a narrow border all around that, if you have a paper punch that will do the job, so much the better.
Sticky fix over the bottom corner of the panel.
The Bailey Island Bridge, which spans Will's Gut and connects Bailey Island to Orr's Island, was completed in 1928. Will's Gut is the only geographical feature that still bears the name of the original non-native inhabitant of the island.
It is the only cribstone bridge in the world. A popular rumor held that there was another cribstone bridge in Scotland that was later destroyed, but no records of such a bridge have ever been found. The unique cribstone design of the bridge permits the substantial tides of that area to flow freely through it, greatly reducing the effect that flow would otherwise have on boats transiting its narrow channel opening.
