The Consignment of the Keys to St. Peter, woven in Rome under the direction of Maria Maddalena della Riviera between 1655 and 1656, is a monumental silk and wool tapestry from the renowned Barberini series at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Based on a design by Giovanni Francesco Romanelli, and a cartoon by Clemente Maioli, the scene depicts Christ delivering the keys of earthly and heavenly authority to St. Peter, the symbolic first pope and predecessor to the tapestryâs patron, Pope Urban VIII. The composition bridges antiquity and the Baroque era by juxtaposing overgrown Roman ruins with the distant silhouette of St. Peterâs Basilica. Framed by allegorical cartouches of Faith, Hope, and Charity, the work is topped by the Barberini family's signature bees, shown here driving a plow to represent their industrious contributions to the Church.
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, at Amsterdam Avenue and 112th Street, is the largest Protestant cathedral in the world and the fourth largest church in the world by area. Famously nicknamed "St. John the Unfinished" due to over a century of stylistic shifts and construction delays, it was originally conceived in 1892 by Heins & LaFarge as a Byzantine-Romanesque hybrid. In 1911, the trustees pivoted to a French Gothic Revival design by Ralph Adams Cram. The structure is celebrated for its massive scale, including a 248-foot long nave with 124-foot ceilings and a "temporary" Guastavino tile dome, as well as its role as a secular cultural hub hosting diverse events like the Blessing of the Animals, Blessing of the Bicycles and high-profile memorials for icons such as Duke Ellington, Eleanor Roosevelt, James Baldwin, Arthur Ashe, Jim Henson, and James Gandolfini.
