The place of women in Sikhism
Amritsar (India) - Sikhism does not recognize castes and advocates equality between men and women. The birth of a girl is not considered a curse, they do not have to pay a dowry when they get married and if divorce is not allowed, the widow has the right to remarry.
They are encouraged to start and run businesses and even to "command armies in times of war". The sacred texts grant them the right to participate equally with men in all worship activities.
That's the theory. In practice, it's a different story, especially in religious practice where reality contradicts the sacred texts. One event – among many others – that occurred in 2003 hit the headlines and continues to pit conservative and liberal Sikhs against each other. Two Sikh women residing in Britain, referring to the sacred texts, had attempted to take part in an important night ritual at the Amritsar temple. This had triggered the anger of the men who had violently opposed the women who had had to give up.
This little caste has a long history. During the Second World War, it served to shelter the Polish presidency in exile (November 1939 - June 1940). Then from 1943 to August 1944 it was used by the officers of the German Kriegsmarine.
Leeuwesteijn caste is one of the oldest estates of the city Vught. In 1753, there was a simple country house built by the family of Heurn. In 1794 the surrender of Den Bosch to here is the French General Pichegru. In 1899, a new, much larger villa built by the family van Rijckevorsel. Later, the house inhabited by the families M and van Lanschot l the Lochte, located in the Reeburg park. This park was laid out around the Huize Reeburg from 1822, which unfortunately was demolished in 1952. That fate is fortunately spared Leeuwesteijn castle. The family van Beuningen Fentener van Vlissingen let the House remodel in 1937 to the present castle-like building. White Castle impresses by the big tower with black Spire and the stepped gable who both beautifully mirroring in the pond Canal. After the conversion they donate it to the municipality of the city Vught that there the Town Hall in establishes. Also the surrounding park Reeburg is restored so the surroundings is nice too. Unfortunately, right on the park lays the busy A2 highway.

The nomads in India have different callings that have become hereditary in the stratified caste system that came in the Vedic period of history of the Indian sub continent. It is still a plague that afflicts this country in countless ways.
While some still ferry sheep and goats from pasture to pasture, others like Lambadiyas carried salt and some others did the entertainment, snake charming etc., while some made iron implements and such moving from place to place.
This is a group of nomads who probably work in makeshift settlements that they put up and make iron implements and tools used in agriculture and houses.
Times have changed and you can make out at least one young nomad who has discarded the traditional clothes.
Even if it rains or snows, they swing low with heads held high on the highway of the Great Movement that began so many millions of year ago from the plains of Africa. While most of the mankind has stopped its yearly journeys in search for food, the journey has not stopped for these handful few

'I have set my life upon a caste,
And I will stand the hazard of the die,
I think there be six Richmonds in the field;
Five have I slain instead of him.
A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!'.
The last words of Richard as he lay dying on the battlefield. He has lost his horse, which was a vital component of a fighter’s equipment in medieval times.
Act 5, scene 4 of Shakespeare’s Richard III.
For some reason, I thought of Richard's words when I came upon this shy, equine beauty one day in New Zealand.

Kakinada, India.
Kites are considered auspicious.
The distinctly rusty red and white plumaged Red Backed Sea Eagle (aka Brahminy Kite) is revered as a messenger of the gods in most eastern cultures.
In Hindu mythology it's called the Garuda, the sacred vehicle of Lord Vishnu.
In the spirit of ornithology and science, birders in India are trying to weed out references to castes in the names of the birds in India.
The American Ornithological Society is pursuing similar efforts to replace age old racial tropes from the names of the birds in North America.
